US Forest Service Claims Greenwood Group Best

Chuck Greenwood, Ponca City, president of The Greenwood Group, is being recognized for his exemplary record and outstanding work ethic. The U.S. Forest Service has nominated Greenwood for National Small Business Prime Contractor of the Year. This nomination honors small businesses that have provided the government and industry with outstanding goods and services as the prime contractors.

“This is huge,” Greenwood said. “We are extremely proud to be nominated for this prestigious award. We have many years experience working with the U.S. Forest Service, and I am humbled to be recognized by them. It is really an honor.”

According to the U.S. Department of State, the purpose of the award is to recognize significant and outstanding contributions that small businesses make. The National Small Business Prime Contractor of the Year Award demonstrates the highest degree of excellence in performance of Department of State contracts.

Greenwood works with the U.S. Forest Service using aircraft for a wide variety of missions. However, the primary mission of the Forest Service Aviation is to support the ground firefighters through a variety of means including safe delivery of smokejumpers, rappellers, air attack, firefighter and cargo transport, surveillance, aerial reconnaissance and fire intelligence gathering, and aerial delivery of fire retardant and water.

“As can be imagined, as Government pilots execute these missions, often in very hazardous environmental situation and fast paced operation tempo, it is reassuring to work with a company with an exemplarily record and work ethic” said Fredrick Geijsbeek, Greenwood’s Nominating Contracting Officer.

The Greenwood Group has worked hand-in-hand with the U.S. Forest Service for five years contracting aircraft and support for aerial supervision and other administrative activities.

“We are behind the scenes,” Greenwood said. “Everyone sees the large air tankers dropping retardant on the fires. However, what they don’t see is our planes leading them into the fire.”

Greenwood has grown significantly in the last few years, expanding offices in Wichita and currently operating aircraft from 14 bases located throughout the United States, including Alaska and are currently exploring other opportunities with the U.S. Forest Service.

“I take my job very seriously,” Greenwood said. “When my name is on the plane, I become accountable for others’ lives. It becomes personal. Our planes execute missions in extremely hazardous environmental situations, at times operating 200 feet above the most impressive fires in the nation. Our primary focus is to protect National Forest lands, cities, businesses, homes, and lives from wildland fires.”

Some of their other customers have included the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, NASA, the U.S. Army, N. O. A. A., and others.

Greenwood said being in the government service business has opened doors to a host of government agencies and military operators, not only for The Greenwood Group, but also other businesses here in Ponca City. Greenwood has government contracts that range from small ones to ones that exceed of 25 million dollars.

“The year 2009 has been a very strong year for us,” Greenwood said, “While the economic environment is creating uncertainty in a number of markets, many of our key clients continue to invest in programs where we excel. This is a great opportunity.”
